Sunday 4th January
Denis Creighton and Sean Jennings of Lisacul HC won the Curraghboy Doubles tournament on Sunday 4th January and took home the Pake Doyle Cup, defeating father and son duo Fergal Jnr and Fergal Snr Coughlan from Clooney, Co Clare. In a display of powerful serving and killing the two Lisacul men overwhelmed their opponents in the final of the competition 31-16.
The Clare pair were slow to get into their stride in this game and the Roscommon men took full advantage with a range of powerful serves early in the game to build up a commanding lead. Creighton was using his sidearm kills off both hands to good effect and Jennings killed some lovely shots. Despite a late Clare rally the title went to the North Roscommon players.
Lorcan Maughan and Neil McDermott of Ballymoe HC took the honours in the Plate competition final defeating Westmeath duo Robbie McCarthy Snr and John Shaughnessy in a well contested game 25-17.
This long running doubles tournament is held on the first Sunday in January in Curraghboy, Co Roscommon and many players use it as a final tune up before the championships kick into gear. Play began at 9:30am on Sunday morning in Curraghboy with a host of doubles teams from Roscommon, Galway, Mayo, Westmeath, Sligo and Clare entered. The winners in both divisions had to play 4 matches to take home the honours, which was a long day of handball. Plate games were played in St Coman’s in Roscommon town with both finals taking place in Curraghboy before a good crowd in the evening.
Presenting the trophies was Frank Kenny of St Brigids GAA club and tournament organiser Seamus McHugh who thanked all the players for travelling to play in the tournament and for the high standard of play on show and he also thanked the volunteers who refereed games.
Great credit must go to the host club who once again ran a very good tournament with a high standard of trophies and for the tasty refreshments provided for players all day long.
