Club Notes 9th August 2020

St Brigid’s club notes week ending August 9th 2020

SFC and JFC Fixtures: A busy week ahead for our men’s teams. Our seniors play their final group game on Saturday evening next in Kiltoom against Elphin at 7pm while on Sunday, our juniors play their second round championship game against St. Ronan’s in Tulsk at 2pm. Best of luck to both teams.

Development Project: St. Brigid’s GAA club has launched a major development project involving the construction of a new gym and meeting room; upgrade and extension of the car-park and refurbishment of the club dressing rooms, kitchen and roof. The club is receiving LEADER funding of €356,849 for these development works and a specific target of approximately €120,000 from our own resources now needs to be raised to ensure we bring these new facilities to fruition as soon as possible. To coincide with the project, a fundraising campaign has now got underway, centring on a ‘Buy a Brick’ initiative where people can sponsor illustrated bricks that will eventually go on mounted displays in the new building extension. Flyers with project and fundraiser details were circulated across homes in the parish in the last week and we are encouraging all our members and our club Diaspora to support the club’s fundraising efforts in whatever way possible in order to bring to fruition a development that will have lasting benefits for our club and community. Full details of our project, including a 3-D video, the fundraiser and payment options are now available on our website and we look forward to your support as we mobilise the fundraiser on the ground over the next week.

Ladies Notes: IntermediateFC - Our Intermediate Ladies contributed to abrilliant Round 3 championship game away to St. Ciaran's on Sunday that endedin a draw. In an absolute thrillerwhere both teams were locked on 14 points each at half-time, our girls built an8 point lead after the break but two St. Ciaran's penalties in the finalquarter ensured a share of the spoils. Full-time score: St. Brigid’s5-12, St. Ciarans 7-6.

U-16 girls: Our U-16s got off the mark in this year’s championship with an away win against Boyle on Friday evening last. After a difficult start to the 2020 championship the girls needed a big performance and they delivered just that with an emphatic team effort which Boyle simply could not live with. After a cagey opening few minutes, Brigid’s had the edge on the game at the first water break, leading by one point which they built on in the second quarter to open up a half time lead of 2-9 to 2-4 despite losing centre back Laoise O’ Donovan to injury midway through the half. At the halftime break, Captain Doireann Ni Ruairc asked her team for a big effort in the third quarter and they responded by giving 15 minutes of the intense free-flowing attacking football which powered them to last year’s Under 16 league and championship titles. When Boyle did manage to break, they were unable to find a way past Amy Gallagher who made two stunning point-blank saves to repel their attacks. The result of this 15-minute power play meant the girls held a commanding 4-14 to 2-8 lead at the final water break. In the last quarter, Boyle threw caution to the wind and drove everything they could at the St Brigid's defence. This almost brought Boyle back into the match but a combination of resolute defending by the St Brigid's girls and some wonderful scores saw them come out on top in a game which really gets their 2020 campaign up and running. In this match, the girls showcased everything that makes this team a joy to watch, and the fact they had eight different players on the score sheet underscored the quality that runs through the heart of this squad and the difficulties that opposing teams always have to contend with when they face St Brigid’s. Final Score: St Brigid’s 5-17. Boyle 5-11 Next up for the Under 16's is a home match against Oran in Kiltoom next Tuesday at 7pm. Team: Amy Gallagher; Aisling Lennon; Laoise Donovan; Norah Canny; Emma Gallagher; Doireann Ni Ruairc; Sally O’Hara; Ria Lennon (1-1); Johanna Hughes (0-1); Kara Gallagher (0-1); Shauna Loftus (2-3; Hannah Lennon; Ciara Fallon (0-4); Abbie Murray (1-5); Sarah O’Rourke (1-1); Jane Hennelly (0-1); Marie Flatley, Katie Hamrock.
