U14 Boys

St.Brigids 4-09, Clan na Gael 2-08

Local rivals Brigids and Clan served up a highly entertaining U14 Championship game in Johnstown on Thu evening last. Both teams played fantastic open attacking football from the throw in right to the last minute. Brigids got off to a great start with a great goal from Bobby Nugent, but Clan responded with 3 points to draw level. Brigids pulled one ahead again, before Clan had a purple patch and scored 1-04 without reply to race into a 6 point lead after 20 minutes. A goal from the ever dangerous James Dillon, and super points from Luke Whelan and Sol Trundle brought Brigids to within 1 point at the break. 1-07 to 2-03, advantage Clan. The second half continued at breakneck pace, and some early wides by Brigids allowed Clan to stay in in the lead. Substitute Brendan Murphy then showed the way with a brilliant goal to get the 2nd half scoring underway, followed by 2 points from Bobby. Again Clan responed with another super goal and a point to leave the minimum between the sides going into the last quarter. With Paddy Higgins and Bryan Armstrong driving forward from half back and Eanna McDonnell and Brian Gonley taking control at midfiled Brigids upped the gears for the final 10 minutes and added further points from Sol,Brendan and Bobby. At this stage of the game, both goal keepers, Matthew Samuels and David Campion produced fantastic saves following fine free flowing moves from both sides. Brigids led by 4 points going into the final minutes and the game was still in the balance with Clan looking dangerous on every attack. However, David Dolan, Ewan Joyce,Sean Minnock and Luke Sylvestor defended expertly to prevent further scores. In the final move of the game, Brendan Murphy blasted home his second goal of the game to finally seal the victory. This was a fantastic win for the lads and the game had some outstanding performance, but none more so than from Daniel Skene in defense who was immense, and Eoin Reid who covered every inch of the pitch and displayed tremendous skill throughout. Alex O’Donoghue also deserves a mention for a fine performance.
