Boyle 4-12 St.Brigids 5-6
St Brigid’s were unlucky not to get something from a tough, tight, entertaining away fixture against a strong Boyle team in the Division 1 Championship.
Boyle started with real intent and scored a goal immediately after the throw in. St. Brigid’s got their first score with Seán Minnock finding Bobby Nugent in space, Nugent played a quick ball to James Dillon who got ahead of his man to score a point. Indeed St. Brigid’s were dominating early possession but unfortunately had three wides in quick succession which would ultimately prove costly. Boyle added a point to their tally before Alex O’Donohue did well to score an equalising goal for St. Brigid’s. Bobby Nugent then put St. Brigids ahead with an excellent turn to score from a tight angle after an excellent 45 from Paddy Higgins. St. Brigid’s continued to enjoy their purple patch with O’Donohue scoring his second goal after good work from Nugent and Eoin Reid. Boyle responded and created a goal opportunity which was saved excellently by Matthew Samuels, Boyle finished the first half strongly scoring four points to leave the half time score 2-06 to 2-02 to the home team.
At the start of the second half St. Brigid’s won the throw in and James Dillion was thwarted after an excellent save from the home goalkeeper. Boyle recovered to score a point before converting a soft penalty. Nugent responded scoring a free after Eanna McDonnell was fouled as he raced goalward.
James Dillon was causing havoc and picked up on a loose ball before blasting the ball into the back of the net. Seán Minnock then found Luke Whelan in some space to score a fine point. Boyle responded with a couple of points before Dillion scored his second goal with a beautiful finish to make the score 4-10 to 4-05 with 10 minutes to play.
Boyle went six ahead courtesy of a soft free. Ewan Joyce, Seán Minnock and Brendan Murphy combined excellently to release Paddy Higgins who raced through the middle to score a lovely team score. Boyle looked to have finally put the game beyond St Brigid’s with two points. The St. Brigid’s lads however had other ideas and with two minutes remaining scored their fifth goal with Minnock finding O’Donohue who fired ball high into the back of the net with his third goal to put just three points between the teams. St. Brigid’s pushed forward in search of an equalising goal leaving space at the back, Samuels produced another excellent save which led to the last attack for the away team however it wasn’t to be leaving the final score 4-12 to 5-06.
This was a strong performance with every St Brigid’s player giving their absolute all.
