Shear-ly ewe have time to volunteer?

If you know your Suffolks from your Jacobs when it comes to sheep – and even if you don’t – the Kepak All Ireland & All Nations Sheep Shearing & Wool Handling Championships 2017 needs ewe. A meeting will be held on Friday 12th May in St. Brigid’s GAA Club at 9pm for anyone interested in volunteering.

The championships take place in Kiltoom this June Bank Holiday Weekend and organisers are urgently looking for volunteers to lend a hand with everything from general admin and assisting with trade stands to handling sheep and directing traffic.

The 2017 Championships are promising to be bigger and better than previous years but are relying on local support to ensure this happens. If you can spare a few hours in the run up to the weekend to help organisers prepare the site or if you are available to help out over the course of the weekend then those behind the event urgently want to hear from you.

Among the roles for which volunteers are being sought are: sheep handlers, assisting with registration of competitors, sponsorship, trade stands, general admin, accommodation management, infrastructure – marquees, signage etc, health & safety, entertainment co-ordination, catering and logistics/parking.

The weekend-long championships will be hosted in conjunction with the Irish Sheep Shearers Association on the grounds of St. Brigid’s GAA Club in Kiltoom, and are expected to attract large numbers of visitors and benefit local businesses throughout the area.

“This event promises to be a memorable weekend and to make this happen a massive community effort is needed. St. Brigid’s is putting in place a full weekend programme of events and would greatly appreciate as many people as possible getting involved in this local community event,” commented Tomas Beades, Chairman of the Organising Committee.

If you can spare a few hours to help out with this event then you are asked to please attend the meeting which is open to everyone from any area on Friday 12th May at 9pm.

Round 1

St. Brigid's 1-16, Padraig Pearses 0-14.

A strong start by St. Brigid's with a goal from Brian Stack and points from Davy Cunniffe, Senan Kilbride, Jack McDonnell and Garvan Dolan ensured a comfort 1-8 to 0-5 lead at half time. This was a much tighter game in the second half with Pearses finding form but Brigid's had that bit more in the tank to secure the win.

U12 Girls

Our u12 girls played Padraig Pearses on Sunday in a non competitive league.

Team: J. Collins, A. Lennon, M. Flatley, R. Rourke, K. Sammon, A. Hardiman, J. Hennelly, C. Fallon, S. O'Hara, L. Sheffield, K. Gallagher, S. Walsh, S. Dolan, F. Loftus, M. McDonnell, G. Keenan, R. Keenan.

U12 Boys

Our Division 1 team had a home match on Wednesday evening last against St. Dominic's.  Although missing a number of players, St. Brigid's were second best against a much slicker and well drilled St.  Dominic's side with the Knockcroghery based side running out convincing winners in the end.

Squad:

Conal Benton, Luke Silvester, Killian Curley, Niall Derwin, Ewan Joyce, Robert Keenan, Brian McDermott, Cormac Meeley, Sean Minnock, Brendan Murphy, Charlie O'Carroll, Leo O'Connell, James O'Rourke, Oisin Tiernan, Billy Ray Dolan, Roan Trundlle and Adam Feeley .

Our Division 5 game scheduled for Kiltoom on Friday evening against Clann na nGael was postponed as a mark of respect due to the sad passing of Donie Shine Snr.

U14 Boys League

St.Michaels 0-4, St.Brigids 3-9

Our Div 1 team made the long journey to Coothall on Thursday evening to take on St.Michaels.  Despite dominating possession in the early stages, it took almost 10 minutes to get the first score, when Bobby Nugent got a point. This was followed by a point from Daniel Keenan and a goal from Hughie Cunniffe.  This was followed by a great goal from Eanna McDonald and further points from Daniel and Michael Sugrue, leaving us leading by 2-05 to 0-0 at the break after playing against a stiff breeze.  The expected onslaught never materialised as St. Michaels got a foothold in the game and scored 4 points on the trot. This sprung Brigids into life, and we responded with another goal from Daniel Keenan, and a great long range point from Thomas O’Brien.  Further points by Bobby and Daniel ensured that we ran out winners in the end. There were good performance in defence by David Dolan, Liam Hennelly, Daniel Meeley and Ronan Doyle, who had an outstanding game. Jamie Curley and Hughie Cunniffe played well in the forwards.Team and Scorers: K.Derwin, L.Hennelly, A.Donovan, D.Dolan, H.Griselan, D.Meeley, R.Doyle, M.Sugrue 0-1, T.O’Brien 0-1,J.Curley, J.Goose,B.Nugent0-2,E.McDonald1-0,H.Cunniffe1-01,D.Keenan1-04 .

Eire Og 7-07, St.Brigids 3-09

Our Div 4 team suffered our first league defeat against Eire Og on Thursday night. This was a game we could have won, but we conceded too many soft goals and our defence will need to tighten up considerable if we are to progress further in this competition. Nevertheless, there were good performance from Luke Murphy, Paddy Higgins, James O’Rourke and Sol Trundle.

Team: M.Sammuals, E.Reid, O.Benton, B.Gonley, L.Murphy ,B. Armstrong, S.Trundle, J.O’Rourke, P.Higgins , A.O’Donoghue,, L.Whelan,C.Meeley, Billy Ray Dolan.

Junior League

St. Brigid's 2-12, Castlerea 3-8.

Our Junior team recorded their second win in the league following a very close game in Kiltoom on Sunday last.

We would like to wish Adrian McHugh a speedy recovery following an injury he picked up in this game.

Team: M. Moran, R. Kelly 0-1, D. Carroll 0-1, K. Grehan, R. Flanagan, C. McBrearty, A. Daly, E. Cunnane, E. Nolan 1-1, G. O'Hara 0-2, J. Cunningham 0-2, G. Dunning, J. McDonnell 1-4, A. McHugh, K. Byrne 0-1.

Subs: P. Daly, J. Leonard, T. Glynn, E. Gleeson, R. Campbell.

Handball
Congratulations to our very own Phillip O'Connor & Paul Kelly on their win in the All-Ireland Over 35 B 40x20 Handball Final. Great job lads.
St. Brigid's 0-14, Strokestown 2-20.

Strokestown had a comprehensive victory over St. Brigid's on Saturday night last in Kiltoom, following a master class of football by Colin Compton scoring 2-8 out of the 2-20. This was a tight game all through the first half with just a point between them at half time St.Brigid's 0-11, Strokestown 0-10.  The second half looked like it was going to be more of the same until three sendings off including two for St. Brigid's midfielders. Strokestown were able to capitalise on this and pushed ahead with no real response from St. Brigid's.

Teams
St. Brigid's: S. Mannion, C. MacNiece, J. Murray, S. Fuery, R. Stack, P. Domican, G. Byrne, G. Dolan 0-1, M. Daly, E. Nolan, B. Stack, J. Cunningham 0-5, J. McDonnell 0-4, S. Kilbride 0-3, D. Cunniffe 0-1.
Subs: K. Byrne, D. Carroll.

Strokestown: J. McHugh, D. Neary, K. Beirne, L. Kelly, D. Butler, R. Molloy, M. Fallon 0-5, D. Rogers 0-1, T. Corcoran, I. Rogers 0-1, K. Murphy 0-1, K. Shiel, K. Finn 0-1, C. Compton 2-8, P. Brogan 0-1.

U12 Boys

Our Division 1 team had a home match on Saturday against Clan na Gael. This was a very entertaining game played with great spirit and determination by both teams. The sides were level at half time and much of the second period remained evenly contested, but Clan finished a little stronger with a few late scores. While the lads will be disappointed with the result, it was very encouraging to see the boys kicking with both feet and a good attitude was shown throughout.

Squad:

Conal Benton,Killian Curley, Niall Derwin, Robert Keenan, Ryan Lawless, Bryan McDermott, Cormac Meeley, Sean Minnock, Brendan Murphy, Charlie O'Carroll, Leo O'Connell, James O'Rourke, Andrew Sheffield and Oisin Tiernan.

At the same time the Division 5 team side was in action against Padraig Pearse's in Woodmount. The lads more than matched a physically bigger and more experienced Pearse's side for determination and skill. Following a tremendous second half fight back, St. Brigids got back on level terms. However an injury time free gave the spoils to the home side

Squad:

M. Henehan, J. Fox, F. Kilcommins, J. Tully, L. Tully, O. Feeley, A Feeley,  J. Kinahan, B. Ferry, C. Ferry, R. Trundle.

U14 Boys Division 4

St.Croans 2-5  St.Brigids 2-16

Our Div 4 team recorded another league victory on Thursday evening with a good away win against St.Croans.   We started off on the attack and notched up a few good points from play, before Croans replied.  We conceded  a very soft goal followed by a point to leave the  game level.  Luke Murphy and James Goose then took control at midfield and we added 5 more points, with Paddy Higgins, James O’Rourke, Eoin Reid and Luke Whelan causing huge problems for the Croans defense. Half time score was 0-9 to 1-2.  The second half resumed with our lads in the ascendancy and Huguie Cunniffe added 2 great goals to open up a commanding lead.  Croans to their credit kept working the scoreboard and added a further 1-3 to keep the game alive, but further points from Luke Whelan, Brian Armstrong, James and Paddy ensured that we came away with two valuable league points.  In addition to the players mentioned above, Harry Griselan (with some superb fielding) and Oran Benton defended brilliantly throughout the game. Brian Gonley and Daniel Skene provided plenty of good ball into the forwards at every opportunity and Alex O’Donoghue had a hand in a number of scores, particularly in the second half.

Team:M.Sammuals, H.Griselan, O.Benton, B.Gonley, L.Murphy 0-1,B.Armstrong 0-1, J.Goose 0-1,D.Skene,  J.O’Rourke 0-7, P.Higgins 0-4, E.Reid , A.O’Donoghue,H.Cunniffe 2-0, L.Whelan 0-2.

The Division 1 side defeated Roscommon Gaels in Lisnamult on Saturday. Team: C. Benton, R. Keenan, C. Meeley, A. Sheffield, J. O’ Rourke, N. Derwin, B. Murphy, E. Joyce, S. Minnock, L. O’ Connell, B. McDermott, C. O’ Carroll, C. Curley, O. Tiernan.

Earlier the Division 5 team finished strongly in Kiltoom to overcome a gallant St. Barry’s team.  Team: M. Henehan, J. Fox, F. Kilcommins, R. Lawless, J. O’ Rourke, J. Tully, L. Tully, O. Feeley, B. McDermott, C. Curley, J. Kinahan, K. Mulligan.

St.Brigids U14’s Boys

Our u14’s had a very busy week with both teams in action Thursday and on Saturday.

The Div 4 team had a narrow win over Roscommon Gaels in Kiltoom, winning by 4 points after a tight game. Paddy Higgins, James O’Rourke and Liam Hennelly were outstanding in this game.

The Div 1 team had a comprehensive win over Roscommon Gaels and registered their first league points of the season. Thomas O’Brien and Daniel Keenan lead the way, as a gallant young Gaels  team made our lads fight all the way for the victory.

On Saturday 25 players travelled to Doora Barefiled near Ennis for a 4 team tournament with Doora- Barefield, Austin Stacks (Tralee) and St.James (Mervue).  We played 4 games and all players got plenty of opportunity to play against teams from other counties. The lads showed great heart and spirit in all four games and played some wonderful football, despite some very tired limbs, particularly in the latter games.  This was a great opportunity for some of our younger players to play with the Div 1 team and Daniel Skene, Luke Whelan (with a brilliant goal) and Eoin Reid can be very proud of their performances.  There were also great performance throughout the day from Martin O’Grady, Michael Sugrue, Bobby Nugent, Daniel Meeley and Davy Dolan.

Squad for both days:

St.Brigids U14 Boys Div 1:

St.Brigids 3-11, Padraig Pearses 5-6

Our Div 1 team lost narrowly to Pearses in an exciting game in Kiltoom on Monday evening. Brigids were very sluggish at the start and allowed  Pearses to get off to a great start and andfound themselves 10 points down after only 15 minutes.  Some positional switches and inspirational play by Adam O’Donovan and Oisin Canny awoke our lads and they played some great football for the remainder of the half to reduce the deficit to just 2 points at the break.  Brigids commenced the 2ndhalf in the same style and raced into the lead for the first time in the game.  However, some slack defending allowed Pearsesin for two soft goals. Two further points followed to establish a 4 point lead going into the last 10 minutes. Brigids rallied again and reduced the deficit to two points, but despite some brave attacking play, Pearses  managed to hold on the the lead until the final whistle and just about deserved their victory.  While our lads were disappointed to lose this game, they can take great heart from the football they played and the determination they showed to come from 10 points down, but will need to ensure that they play for a full 60 minutes in future. Team and scorers:

K.DerwinS.DalyA.Donovan,D.Dolan,D.Meeley,B.Nestor,M.Sugrue,T.O’Brien1-1,M.O’Grady 0-1,R.Doyle, C.Hand 0-2, P.Higgins,D.Keenan1-1, B.Nugent1-1, J.Curley 0-1. Subs O.Canny 0-4 for P.Higgins.

St.Brigids U14 Boys Div 4:

St.Brigids 4-8, Padraig Pearses 1:2

Our Division 4 team got their Spring league campaign off to a great start with a fine win in Woodmount on Saturday evening.. From the start of the game, Liam, Harry and Oran were solid in defence and Daniel and Sol dominated midfield and provided a plentiful supply of good ball into the forwards. Despite some great movement and passing combinations by Alex, Eoin and Luke, some poor finishing and decision making, ensured that Brigids only had 2 scores to show for their efforts at half time.

Some early scores by Pearses in the second half ensured that the game  remained in the balance, but the Brigids forwards then found their scoring touch and reeled off some great scores to finally put daylight between the teams.  Paddy, James and Eanna’s hard work eventually paid off  in the half forward line and they contributed 2-6 between them.  In addition to the above mentioned, Matthew’s kickouts set up numerous attacks, and Brian G, Luke and Bryan A were outstanding throughout the game in the half back line.

Team:M.SammualsL.HennellyH.GriselanO.BentonB.GonleyL.Murphy,B.ArmstronD.SkehanS.Trundle 0-1J.O’Rourke 0-3P.Higgins 1-2E.McDonnell 1-1E.Reid 1-0, A.O’Donoghue1-0, L.Whelan 0-1.

St. Dominic's had more firepower in front of goals and our girls just couldn't match them at the end.

This means that we are looking for parents to help on match days by doing up team sheets and keeping a record of the score so that we can put together match report for local papers, social media, and our website. There will be a simple template for parents to use on match day. This template is easy to fill in with the team and record scores, a photo of the team sheet can be taken and sent to the appropriate person to compile a match report. If you know anyone that may be interested in helping, please contact club PRO Áine Martin on 086-3791294 or e-mail ainemartin1@gmail.com
