Under 12 Boys

Our under 12 boys played Padraig Pearse's in the Shield  competition in Kiltoom two weeks ago. This game was a play-off with the winners progressing to the Shield Final.
The match was played in great spirit with some high quality football played by both sides. The first half was nip and tuck with the sides dead-locked on 0-7 points a piece at the interval.
On the resumption,  St. Brigid's dominated the early exchanges but could only muster one score for their endeavors. By contrast when Pearses lifted the siege they managed of kick three scores in a low row to move two points clearly. Despite some valiant displays St Brigid's were not able to reel in their South Roscommon neighbours with Pearse's closing out the game by a few scores.
Padraig Pearse's now advance to the Shield Final while St. Brigids can look forward tot he commencement of the summer league.

Feile

Our u14 Feile team had a great weekend in Fermanagh for the national Feile Competition. They topped their group after defeating Mayobridge and Enniskillen Gaels on Friday night and host club Derrygonnelly on Saturday morning. They took on Shamrock Gaels of Longford in the quarter final on Saturday afternoon and qualified for the semi final against Mungret St Pauls (Limerick) on Sunday. However Mungret St Paul's came out the winners after a great battle between the teams.

Massive thanks to all the fantastic people of Derrygonnelly Harps GAC for their amazing hospitality and kindness. All the players, parents and management have come back raving about all the lovely people they have met and the brilliant facilities that you have.

Commiserations to our superb u14 team and their management, such a great effort put in by you all, we are very proud of you and it was a super achievement to reach the semi-final stage.

Finally many thanks to all the player's families and friends for all your help and support over the last few months but especially over the this weekend.

U14 Football National Feile

Now that the sheep shearing is over, our thoughts now  turn to Feile.  Having won the Roscommon Feile, our U14 have  qualified for the National Feile Finals in Cavan/Fermanagh and Down, to be held on the weekend of 23/24 and 25th of June.

Our host club is Derrygonnelly Gaels, situated just outside Enniskillen in Co.Fermanagh. 29 players will be staying with host families and will play a minimum of 4 games over the weekend. We will play in Division 3 and are in a group with  Derrygonnelly Gaels, Enniskellen Gaels from Fermanagh and Mayobridge from Down.  The winners and runners up in our group will play the winners and runners up of a group containing Kinnegad from Westmeath and Ballymahon from Longford, so a local derby may be in the offing.  Other notable teams in Division 3 are Mungret (Limerick), Sarsfields (Wexford),Castleknock (Dublin) and Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickams(Tipperary).  These are all top quality teams, having won in their respective counties, so our lads will need to be at their best to progress in this tournament.

Nevertheless, all players are busy preparing for, and are eagerly looking forward to the weekend. Our  new Feile gear has arrived (special thanks to Declan O'Grady for his generous sponsorship), so we will be well kitted out for this weekend.

Almost 100 St.Brigids parents and supporters are travelling up for the weekend, and have taken over the local holiday village Tir Navar  for the duration of the competition. Due to the numbers travelling, the village complex was unable to accommodate everyone, so the overflow will be staying in Enniskillen and surrounding towns.  This should be a great club occasion for all the players, families and supporters and everyone has been looking forward to this for the past number of weeks.

Our host Club Derrygonnelly Gaels have already extend the arm of hospitality with offers of curries, barbeques and sing songs for all.

The host families have been paired with our players and contact has been made by parents to ensure all is in order.

This promises to be a memorable weekend for our young players,  on the playing field  where they will get to compete against the champions of other counties, and off the pitch, where livelong  friendships and memories will be formed.

Minor League Final

St. Brigid's 2-8, Clann na nGael 0-12.

Saturday last saw the minor team claim the league title for 2017 after a hard fought win over Clann na nGael in Ballyforan. With the aid of the strong breeze in the first half Brigid's set about getting the most value out of it, but were hampered by a number of wides over the opening half hour. However, Brian Derwin converted a penalty after Paul McGrath had been fouled and he added a second goal which left the half time score at 2-3 to 0-5 in favour of Brigid's. The second half saw Clann draw level at one point, but Brigid's rallied and with two Donnacha Gately frees, they stretched out their lead again, which they held until the final whistle, winning on a score.

Afterwards, captain Brian Derwin accepted the trophy on behalf of the team. Well done to all involved. It was a great win and they now take a deserved break as the focus for many of the players turns to their studies. We wish all  doing their leaving and junior cert exams all the very best over the coming few weeks.

Team:
Seamus Smith, Keelan O Conner, Eoin Minagh, Gary Daly, Pearce Frost, Cian McBrearty, Paul McGrath (0-1), Billy McDonald, Shane Cunnane, Ian O' Rourke, Donnacha Gately (0-4), Ruairí Smith, Tom O Carroll, Ciarán Sugrue (0-1), Brian Derwin (2-3).

U14 Boys Division 1 League

St.Brigids 2-08, Boyle 2-06

Our Div 1 team completed their spring leagues fixtures in Boyle on Tue evening with a very tight win over an excellent Boyle side. Aided by a stiff breeze, Brigids went on the attack right from the start and had two fine points on the board from James O’Rourke and Daniel Keenan before Boyle responded with a goal and a point to take the lead. Paddy Higgins added a goal for Brigids after his long range effort deceived the goalie and ended up in the net. Further points from D.Keenan and a brilliant goal from J.O’Rourke after a one two with Martin O’Grady put some daylight between the teams.  Jamie Curley with a great point from distance, and two points from B.Nugent from difficult angles gave Brigids a 2-06 to 1-01 lead at half time.  Facing into the breeze for the second half, Brigids knew they would face a difficult 30 minutes of football, and that was exactly how it worked out.  Boyle played some great football and gradually narrowed the gap down to 4 points with 15 minutes remaining. Despite Martin and Michael winning great possession in midfield , Brigids struggled to get scores due to some poor decision making and shooting.  Thomas O’Brien finally worked the scorekeeper with an inspirational point after a surging run forward. The last 10 minutes was end to end stuff with Boyle adding 3 more points, but brilliant defending by A.O’Donovan, R.Doyle, L.Murphy, S.Daly and K.Derwin  ensured that Brigids did not concede the all important goal and held out for a hard fought 2 point win.  Every player on the pitch contributed to this victory, but none more so than the brilliant David Dolan, who had an outstanding game and he just edges out the tenacious Daniel Meeley who was also outstanding, for the man of the match. While this was not our best performance, the team did show great heart, determination and tenacity to hold out for the win, which  ensures that we have qualified for the play offs in both Div 1 and Div 4.

K.Derwin, S.Daly, A.Donovan, D.Dolan, R.Doyle, D.Meeley,L.Murphy , M.Sugrue 0-1,M.O’Grady, P.Higgins 1-0,, T.O’Brien 0-1,B.Nugent0-2, J.Curley 0-1, J.O’Rourke  1-02,D.Keenan0-2,,H.Cunniffe, O.Benton, S.Trundle, L.Hennelly, H.Griselan.

Senior League

St. Brigid's 4-12, Padraig Pearses 0-8.

Our senior side had a comprehensive victory over Padraig Pearses on Sunday last in Kiltoom. Two goals from Senan Kilbride, and one a piece for Garvan Dolan and Brian Stack help to secure the comfortable win.

Team: S. Mannion, C. MacNiece, D. Donnelly, N. McInerney, E. Sheehy 0-1, P. Domican, R. Stack, G. Dolan 1-2, I. Kilbride, D. Cunniffe, P. Kelly, D. Dolan 0-1, J. McDonnell 0-1, S. Kilbride 2-3, C. McHugh 0-1.

Shear-ly ewe have time to volunteer?

If you know your Suffolks from your Jacobs when it comes to sheep – and even if you don’t – the Kepak All Ireland & All Nations Sheep Shearing & Wool Handling Championships 2017 needs ewe. A meeting will be held on Friday 12th May in St. Brigid’s GAA Club at 9pm for anyone interested in volunteering.

The championships take place in Kiltoom this June Bank Holiday Weekend and organisers are urgently looking for volunteers to lend a hand with everything from general admin and assisting with trade stands to handling sheep and directing traffic.

The 2017 Championships are promising to be bigger and better than previous years but are relying on local support to ensure this happens. If you can spare a few hours in the run up to the weekend to help organisers prepare the site or if you are available to help out over the course of the weekend then those behind the event urgently want to hear from you.

Among the roles for which volunteers are being sought are: sheep handlers, assisting with registration of competitors, sponsorship, trade stands, general admin, accommodation management, infrastructure – marquees, signage etc, health & safety, entertainment co-ordination, catering and logistics/parking.

The weekend-long championships will be hosted in conjunction with the Irish Sheep Shearers Association on the grounds of St. Brigid’s GAA Club in Kiltoom, and are expected to attract large numbers of visitors and benefit local businesses throughout the area.

“This event promises to be a memorable weekend and to make this happen a massive community effort is needed. St. Brigid’s is putting in place a full weekend programme of events and would greatly appreciate as many people as possible getting involved in this local community event,” commented Tomas Beades, Chairman of the Organising Committee.

If you can spare a few hours to help out with this event then you are asked to please attend the meeting which is open to everyone from any area on Friday 12th May at 9pm.

To keep up to date with the Sheep Shearing weekend log on to www.sheepshearingkiltoom.com or visit the pages on Facebook: St. Brigid's GAA Club Kiltoom and All Ireland and All Nations Sheep Shearing and Wool Handling Championships 2017.

A strong start by St. Brigid's with a goal from Brian Stack and points from Davy Cunniffe, Senan Kilbride, Jack McDonnell and Garvan Dolan ensured a comfort 1-8 to 0-5 lead at half time. This was a much tighter game in the second half with Pearses finding form but Brigid's had that bit more in the tank to secure the win.

U12 Girls

Our u12 girls played Padraig Pearses on Sunday in a non competitive league.

Team: J. Collins, A. Lennon, M. Flatley, R. Rourke, K. Sammon, A. Hardiman, J. Hennelly, C. Fallon, S. O'Hara, L. Sheffield, K. Gallagher, S. Walsh, S. Dolan, F. Loftus, M. McDonnell, G. Keenan, R. Keenan.

U12 Boys

Our Division 1 team had a home match on Wednesday evening last against St. Dominic's.  Although missing a number of players, St. Brigid's were second best against a much slicker and well drilled St.  Dominic's side with the Knockcroghery based side running out convincing winners in the end.

Squad:

Conal Benton, Luke Silvester, Killian Curley, Niall Derwin, Ewan Joyce, Robert Keenan, Brian McDermott, Cormac Meeley, Sean Minnock, Brendan Murphy, Charlie O'Carroll, Leo O'Connell, James O'Rourke, Oisin Tiernan, Billy Ray Dolan, Roan Trundlle and Adam Feeley .

Our Division 5 game scheduled for Kiltoom on Friday evening against Clann na nGael was postponed as a mark of respect due to the sad passing of Donie Shine Snr.

U14 Boys League

St.Michaels 0-4, St.Brigids 3-9

Our Div 1 team made the long journey to Coothall on Thursday evening to take on St.Michaels.  Despite dominating possession in the early stages, it took almost 10 minutes to get the first score, when Bobby Nugent got a point. This was followed by a point from Daniel Keenan and a goal from Hughie Cunniffe.  This was followed by a great goal from Eanna McDonald and further points from Daniel and Michael Sugrue, leaving us leading by 2-05 to 0-0 at the break after playing against a stiff breeze.  The expected onslaught never materialised as St. Michaels got a foothold in the game and scored 4 points on the trot. This sprung Brigids into life, and we responded with another goal from Daniel Keenan, and a great long range point from Thomas O’Brien.  Further points by Bobby and Daniel ensured that we ran out winners in the end. There were good performance in defence by David Dolan, Liam Hennelly, Daniel Meeley and Ronan Doyle, who had an outstanding game. Jamie Curley and Hughie Cunniffe played well in the forwards.Team and Scorers: K.Derwin, L.Hennelly, A.Donovan, D.Dolan, H.Griselan, D.Meeley, R.Doyle, M.Sugrue 0-1, T.O’Brien 0-1,J.Curley, J.Goose,B.Nugent0-2,E.McDonald1-0,H.Cunniffe1-01,D.Keenan1-04 .

Eire Og 7-07, St.Brigids 3-09

Our Div 4 team suffered our first league defeat against Eire Og on Thursday night. This was a game we could have won, but we conceded too many soft goals and our defence will need to tighten up considerable if we are to progress further in this competition. Nevertheless, there were good performance from Luke Murphy, Paddy Higgins, James O’Rourke and Sol Trundle.

Team: M.Sammuals, E.Reid, O.Benton, B.Gonley, L.Murphy ,B. Armstrong, S.Trundle, J.O’Rourke, P.Higgins , A.O’Donoghue,, L.Whelan,C.Meeley, Billy Ray Dolan.

Junior League

St. Brigid's 2-12, Castlerea 3-8.

Our Junior team recorded their second win in the league following a very close game in Kiltoom on Sunday last.

We would like to wish Adrian McHugh a speedy recovery following an injury he picked up in this game.

Team: M. Moran, R. Kelly 0-1, D. Carroll 0-1, K. Grehan, R. Flanagan, C. McBrearty, A. Daly, E. Cunnane, E. Nolan 1-1, G. O'Hara 0-2, J. Cunningham 0-2, G. Dunning, J. McDonnell 1-4, A. McHugh, K. Byrne 0-1.

Subs: P. Daly, J. Leonard, T. Glynn, E. Gleeson, R. Campbell.
